XIXth century. Matilde Penalver against the rules of aristocracy to which she belongs, falls in love with Adolfo Solis - a militarian who does not have any inheritance. She trusts, that her kind father will allow her to marry him. But, Augusta - Matilde's mother, is compelled to marry her daughter to a rich person to rescue a family from ruin. Manuel Fuentes Guerra appeared as an ideal candidate in husbands as he is young, beautiful, and has just received in inheritance a great condition. Augusta ignored the fact, that Manuel is an illegitimate son of Joaqin Fuentes Guerra, - a powerful land owner who only some months before his death acceptes Manuel as his son.

For the sake of the purpose, Augusta and her son Umberto achieved, that Adolfo was taken to prison, and Matilde was forced to believe, that her beloved married, and became a father. Matilde, under the pressure of her mother and, knowing, that Manuel covered the debts of her family, makes decision to marry him.
Adolfo manages to run from the prison, and, then he searches for his adored Matilde. But he finds her at the moment when she already told "yes" to Manuel at the altar. Despaired Adolfo achieves to talk secretly with Matilde. Having sworn in eternal love, they make decision to escape together, but Manuel finds out about Matilde's plan. This opening hurts him a lot, because he loves his wife, and he takes her away to the manor, far away from her beloved.

The staying in the manor is intolerable for Matilde because she does not love her husband and, except this she should bear the intrigues of Antonia - a daughters of the manager who is in love with Manuel.
After intensive searches Adolfo finds Matilde and he) manages to be arranged in a manor as a new manager to be closer to her. Manuel, not knowing who actually is a new manager, sympathizes with him, and he behaves himself with him very friendly. Adolfo, despite of jealousy, should accept, that Manuel is a fair and considerable person.

During some certain time, Manuel and Matilde understand, that they became victims of greed and intrigues of Augusta and Umberto. At the same time, great attention and sights full passions with which Manuel treats Matilde change something in her attitude to him. She understands, that love which she felt to Adolfo, disappeared and, in its place now there is a new feeling, more powerfull and real - a love to her husband.
Matilde tells the truth about her feelings to Adolfo whom she doesn't love any more, trying to make it the most painless. With the broken heart Adolfo leaves the manor. This very day Matilde declares to Manuel, that soon they will became parents, because she is pregnant.

But the happiness doesn't last for long time. Manuel finds out, that ex-manager was the beloved of his wife. Thinking, that Matilde lied to him all time, he expels the wife from the manor. Manuel has doubts about his paternity and nothing can touch his heart. Manuel tries to forget Matilde in the embraces of Antonia.
